My Rental Regulation Journey
My journey as a regulatory expert began when my elderly neighbor in Oakland, who owned a duplex, found herself in a difficult situation with a squatter. Her tenant had stopped paying rent, yet continued to remain in the property, refusing to leave. I was appalled that someone could occupy her property without paying, while she struggled to reclaim her rights as the owner! Determined to help, I dove into researching the law and took on the challenge of filing an In Pro Per eviction. I didn't have a law degree, but I was successful in getting the squatter evicted. Through this experience, I witnessed firsthand how the courts and tenant attorneys unfairly vilified my neighbor - simply because she was a rental property owner.
By the time I was ready to rent out my own property, I was already deeply immersed in housing law and knew I had to master every regulation in order to protect my investment. In 2015, I was offered a position as the newly appointed Executive Director of the Berkeley Rental Housing Coalition—an extension of the Berkeley Property Owners Association. The organization was focused on political and legal issues in housing, something I already knew a lot about. I accepted the role, and from that moment, I was hooked! Now I spend my days lobbying for housing providers in Berkeley, Oakland and at the state capitol.
